When Do You Want To Go?
This 6-day itinerary delves into the rich culture and history of this part of Japan, beginning in Kyoto and ending in the vibrant city of Osaka, renowned for its incredible food scene. In between, a wealth of immersive experiences awaits, with guided tours of Kyoto, Kobe and Osaka included and opportunities to observe the traditional customs of Geishas, attending a traditional tea ceremony and visits to ancient shrines and immaculate Japanese gardens.
Day 1: Kyoto
Arrive in Kyoto where your first day is at leisure. We recommend exploring the ‘Geisha District’ of Gion. See how the ancient customs of traditional Japanese life still co-exist along-side modern life, tucked between the skyscrapers and where Geisha wander through the narrow alleyways wearing kimonos.
Day 2: Kyoto
Meet your guide in the morning and embark on a full day tour of Uji and Ikaruga. Known as the tea capital of Japan, Uji is home to one of the most impressive Jodo sect temples in the country which you can visit before stopping at a traditional tea house to sample the authentic taste of Uji’s ‘matcha’. Experience a ride on one of Japan’s iconic trains to reach Nara, a former capital of Japan and where ancient temples and shrines can still be discovered in the district of Ikaruga, including the Horyu-ji Temple which contains the world’s oldest surviving wooden structure.
Day 3: Kobe
After a leisurely morning in Kyoto, head to Kobe (just a one-hour train ride away), a thriving harbour town and once the most important trading port during the Meiji era. Wander through the vibrant district of Kobe Chinatown, soak up the atmosphere at Meriken Park on the waterfront and explore the excellent Kobe Maritime Museum.
Day 5-6: Osaka
This morning, leave Kobe behind as you head towards your final stop in Kansai, the colourful city of Osaka, which will be reached after a 3.5-hour bullet train ride. After settling into your hotel there will be plenty of time for self-exploration of the city before you meet a local guide who will take you on a culinary adventure through the city. Visit a range of street food stalls, wander through bustling markets and of course sample delicious Japanese dishes.
