Whilst the country is split, and not only by the South China Sea, Malaysia is fused by a love of great cuisine, its welcoming people and beautiful landscapes.
The Malaysian section of Borneo is wild and raw with vast quantities of jungle protecting many species of endangered wildlife in its rainforest canopies. For those who do not make it to Borneo, there is more than enough to occupy on the mainland and nearby islands. Many take to the coral waters filled with tropical fish and turtles for an unparalleled diving or snorkelling experience – the Perhentian Islands and Langkawi Island are two of the best hot-spots. Visitors to Penang can also seek out the island’s cultural capital, George Town, a vibrant and multi-cultural colonial city, where quaint shops and beautiful mosques and temples contrast with gleaming western-style skyscrapers. The misty mountains of the Cameron highlands provide a welcome cooler retreat within the interior of the peninsula with trekking and agricultural touring opportunities aplenty. The Taman Negara Reserve is a haven for bird watchers, whilst elephant and flying squirrel sightings are not uncommon.
Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, epitomises the country’s cultural diversity and Malay, Chinese and Indian influences can easily be observed in its architecture. The landmark Petronas Twin Towers dominate the skyline, but ornate mosques and temples often fill the gaps between the city’s skyscrapers, as ancient cultures blend seamlessly into the modern world.
