When Do You Want To Go?

Introduction

Take a leisurely road trip across Canada’s smallest province, Nova Scotia, beginning and ending in its capital, Halifax.  Across 13-days, experience the utterly beautiful natural landscapes of Atlantic Canada and its many historic sites, verdant national parks and charming communities. The drives in Nova Scotia are undeniably some of the continent’s most scenic, particularly the Cabot Trail which circumnavigates around Cape Breton Island and with a number of excursions included, you have all the ingredients for an incredible Atlantic Canadian adventure.

Day-by-Day

Day 1: Halifax

One night in the delightful seaside town of Halifax before your self-drive adventure begins the following morning.

Day 2: Lunenburg

Take the scenic drive to Lunenburg, stopping at Peggy’s Cove on the way. The small village is UNESCO protected, largely because of its beautiful lighthouse overlooking the Atlantic and serves as a wonderful detour to break up the journey.

Days 3 & 4: Annapolis Royal

Cross the peninsula via the Kejimkujik National Park, a region renowned for its hiking trails and wilderness lakes. If you wish, discover the natural history of the park with interpretive guides before continuing your journey to Annapolis Royal. Rise early the following morning for a whale-watching excursion on the nutrient rich waters of the Bay of Fundy.

Day 5: Wolfville

Today on your journey to Wolfville, we highly recommend you factor in time to stop at the Grand-Pré National Historic Site, a historic Acadian settlement. The Domaine de Grand Pré is a fantastic winery en route, and also worthy of the small detour.

Days 6 - 8: Charlottetown

Stop at the Bay of Fundy before crossing the 13km long Confederation Bridge, arriving in Charlottetown, your base for the next three nights. The town is Canada’s birthplace and the exceptional history of the region can be explored in detail with an included guided tour on day 7 of the itinerary. On your final day in Charlottetown, explore the picturesque Prince Edward Island National Park, and its myriad of hiking trails, deserted beaches, salt marshes and diverse coastal landscapes.

Days 9 - 11: Baddeck

Depart Charlottetown along Route 1 to Woods Islands Ferry, taking the scenic crossing to Caribou and then driving on to Cape Breton Island. Using the coastal village of Baddeck as a base for the next three-nights, the undoubted highlight of the region is the Cabot Trail, which circumnavigates around the island, and remains the best way to experience its stunning ocean vistas and national parks. We recommended allowing a full day to drive the loop, leaving plenty of time for hiking and exploring the excellent Acadian Cultural Centre & Museum. On your final day on the island, head north to visit the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, a living museum and the largest historical reconstruction in North America.

Day 12: Halifax

A full day’s drive is required today to return to Halifax for a final night. The journey is beautiful though, passing through the Bras d’Or Lakes region and the Canso Causeway. After a short recommended stop at Antigonish, travel southwest along the scenic Marine Drive, to arrive in Halifax in the late afternoon.

Day 13: Departure

This morning, drop off your rented vehicle ready for departure.
