When Do You Want To Go?

Introduction

This incredible itinerary combines rich cultural history, spectacular landscapes, exclusive animal rich land and water safari experiences and idyllic barefoot beach luxury. Explore the dramatic beauty of the Drakensberg, where mountains meet extensive farmlands, crystal-clear lakes and distinctive rock formations. Discover the gruelling history of the Anglo-Zulu war and the haunting stories of bravery and brutality from the violent battles that happened in KwaZulu-Natal. Learn about the conservation of the rhinos in Zululand and experience the incredible diversity of wildlife on big 5 safaris in Manyoni Private Game Reserve. Relax at the serene Thonga Beach Lodge on the pure golden sands of South Africa’s east coast and complete the trip with a stay in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site renowned for marine and wetland animals and its ecological diversity.

Day-by-Day

Day 1 - 3: Drakensberg

Arrive in Durban and collect your rental car before heading off to the Drakensberg for three nights at the Montusi Mountain Lodge, with panoramic views of the magnificent northern Drakensberg. Spend your days exploring the crystal-clear lakes, peaceful foothills and picture postcard beauty of this World Heritage Site. Outdoor activities are easily organised with an adventure centre nearby, or simply relax into the natural beauty and tranquillity of this stunning setting.

Day 4 - 6: KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields

The historic battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal tell the story of the vicious wars fought between the Boer, Zulu and the British, leaving behind the hauntingly poignant memorials and whispers of the tales from blood-soaked battles. Stay three nights at Fugitives’ Drift Lodge, within the natural conservancy overlooking the infamous Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift battlefields. A tour of the battlefields reveals the gripping detail of the Anglo-Zulu war and the greatest military disaster in British colonial history.

Day 7 - 9: Manyoni Private Game Reserve

Spend the next three nights at Rhino Sands Safari Camp, nestled in the forest and perfectly positioned to explore the surrounding wilderness. The reserve is known for it’s population of endangered black rhinos, however it is not only one of the most beautiful reserves in South Africa, but has one of the most species-diverse and animal-rich too. Your stay includes twice daily game drives in this unique safari destination, which is regulated to ensure minimal impact and more intimate game viewing.

Day 10 - 12: Maputaland Coast

Time for some relaxation, the next three nights are spent in the barefoot luxury of Thonga Beach Lodge, with a sense of being on a deserted island. Spend the lazy days snorkelling or perhaps kayaking on Lake Sibaya, with guided forest walks and a cultural tour of Mabibi Village. Enjoy an idyllic sundowner by the lake, al fresco dining and the sun, sea and salty ocean breeze of this special place.

Day 13 - 15: iSimangaliso Wetland Park

The final three nights can be enjoyed at Makakatana Bay Lodge, surrounded by the vast wilderness and wetlands of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. This World Heritage Site offers excellent diving and is known for its beaches where the Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles can be seen laying their eggs. Your stay includes full day safaris with picnic lunches, all meals and drinks with an outdoor dining area for candlelit meals.

Day 16: Departure

Drop the car at the airport before catching your return flight home.
