Introduction

This 12-day itinerary combines the rich culture and history of Sri Lanka, with incredible wildlife encounters in the country’s best National Parks and magical moments in the picturesque coastal town of Galle. Visit unmissable Sigiriya Rock and ride the train through rolling countryside from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya.


Day-by-Day

Day 1: Negombo

After arriving at Colombo International Airport, you’ll meet your driver/guide and transfer to your hotel in Negombo for the night. 

Day 2: Anuradhapura to Sigiriya

Depart Negombo and head to Anuradhapura, once the kingdom of kings and queens of ancient Ceylon, this historic site holds the ruins of fortresses, gardens and temples. Continue to Sigiriya and check into your hotel for the next three nights. 

Day 3: Sigiriya Rock Fortress

In the morning, after an early breakfast, climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress, where the grandeur and complexity of 5th century Sri Lankan urban planning can be discovered in the remains of this city at the top of a rock. 

Day 4: Minneriya National Park

The next day, a pottery making class teaches the art of pottery making in a hands on class, plus, enjoy a handloom demonstration. In the afternoon visit Minneriya National Park, famous for it’s huge herds of elephant and numerous other wildlife species.

Day 5: Kandy

Visit the Temple of the Tooth, where the relic of the Lord Buddha is housed, this temple was the Royal Palace of the former Kingdom of Kandy and is a listed UNESCO heritage site.

Day 6: Nuwara Eliya

After breakfast, board the train to Nuwara Eliya, a journey through the mountains and tea plantations and crossing spectacular bridges and enjoying the breath-taking views. Arrive in the very British feeling countryside village of Nuwara Eliya, where English style houses line English named streets.

Day 7: Nuwara Eliya – Horton Plains National Park

Enjoy a trek in Horton Plains National park, known for its endemic flora and variety of wildlife, including Bear Monkey, Leopard, barking deer and giant squirrel. Then enjoy afternoon tea back at Nuwara Eliya’s Grand Hotel.

Day 8 & 9: Yala National Park

View 7kms of tea estates from Lipton’s Seat – the highest point in Dambatenna and hike to Little Adams peak through rolling tea gardens and beautiful mountain scenery. Continue on the journey to Yala National Park for the next two nights. In the morning, a safari drive is filled with anticipation and the hope of spotting an elusive leopard.

Day 10 & 11: Galle

On todays drive to Galle, stop off at Tangalle Blow hole, said to be the second largest in the world, depending on currents and pressure the water shooting skyward can reach 25 meters in height. Visit the fishermen perched on stilts, shallow water fly fishing, before arriving in Galle, a pretty Dutch colonial town, famous for its fort. The following day, head out on an early morning whale watching excursion with a packed breakfast, where between November and April, humpback and blue whales can be seen. At sunset, take a ride in a convertible tuk tuk along the southern coast and toast the perfect end to this Sri-Lankan journey.

Day 12: Departure

Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
